Quantitative Methods for HIV Researchers

We are looking forward to the beginning of Part 1 (Basic Data Science) of the Quantitative Methods for HIV Researchers Workshop and we hope you are too.  If you requested a parking permit, but have not received it, please email kay.scott@duke.edu. We realize that this email message is long, but ask that you read the whole thing carefully because it contains many important details.

--------------------------------------------
Location
--------------------------------------------

The workshop will meet in Hock Plaza at 2424 Erwin Road (https://goo.gl/maps/NDbRB).  We will be using different rooms on different days:

1. CRTP classroom

2. 11025 Hock

The CRTP classroom is on the 2nd floor. The main Hock entrance is on the 3rd floor, so you need to take the elevator DOWN ONE FLOOR (sometime a badge is required to exit the stairwell on the 2nd floor, so don't take the stairs unless you are feeling lucky). The route to the CRTP classroom is a long maze, but there are very helpful signs pointing the way, just keep following the signs and you will get there eventually.
11025 Hock is on the 11th floor. Once you exit the elevator lobby follow signs to 11025, it is also a maze, but not as long as the second floor.

--------------------------------------------
Times
--------------------------------------------

The first workshop will be on Friday August 30th at 9am in the CRTP classroom. All workshop sessions will be 9am - 4pm.  Please plan to arrive at Hock Plaza by 8:50am on the first day to allow time for the elevators and for you to find the classroom.

--------------------------------------------
Food
--------------------------------------------

We will have a short break between the first and second morning session, a longer lunch break, and another short break between the two afternoon sessions.
In the morning snacks and coffee will be provided. You will be responsible for your own lunch.  There is a cafe on the entrance level of Hock and several other restaurants a short walk away for those who wish to purchase food.

--------------------------------------------
Computer
--------------------------------------------

You will need to bring your own computer for the course!  Any computer that can comfortably run a current version of Firefox, Chrome, or Safari should be fine.  We will be working in a web-based computing environment (RStudio Server) so all the computational “heavy lifting" happens on a Duke hosted server.  Different course instructors use OS X, Windows, and Linux with no problem.

Our primary classroom has power outlets and ethernet ports at each seat, so don't forget your computer's power adapter.

--------------------------------------------
NetID
--------------------------------------------

Please be sure to bring (or have memorized) your NetID and password.  You will need it to access the secured WiFi network.  The Duke visitor network sometimes does not allow connections to our computing environment.

--------------------------------------------
Transportation
--------------------------------------------

Bike: There are bike racks in the Hock Plaza parking garage next to the entrance gates for the lot.
Bus: The Duke H5 bus stops at Hock Plaza.  The Duke H6 bus stops nearby as do several GoDurham and GoTriangle buses.  Details are available at <https://parking.duke.edu/buses>
