Improving Pneumonia Outcomes of HIV-Exposed Uninfected Children in Botswana

Matthew Kelly, MD, MPH, Pediatric Infectious Disease Fellow at Duke University. About the Lecture: In African settings, HIV-exposed uninfected children are 2-4 times more likely to die than the children of HIV-negative mothers. Most of these excess deaths among HIV-exposed uninfected children are from pneumonia. In this presentation, Dr. Matthew Kelly will use data from an ongoing study in Botswana to describe the causes and outcomes of pneumonia among HIV-exposed uninfected children. In addition, he will discuss the relative importance of factors that contribute to the poor outcomes of HIV-exposed uninfected children, and propose special considerations for pneumonia treatment in these children. Lunch will be provided.
