Journal Club Proposal
We will be starting a biostatistics journal club if there is sufficient interest from CFAR members. The idea of the journal club is to help investigators understand the statistical issues in experiment design and analysis. The ideal paper uses a design that you are considering and/or a statistical technique that is new to you. The clinical researchers will discuss the science behind the study and the statisticians will provide a tutorial about the statistical methods. A general discussion will follow. Please follow the Journal club link for details and to submit paper nominations.
Talk on Sample Size Calculations
Greg Samsa PhD (Associate Professor of Biostatistics) has offered to give a 90-minute presentation on sample size for researchers. The first portion of the session will illustrate the mechanics of sample size calculations for various observational and interventional designs - this is how the statisticians make the calculations. The second portion will illustrate how researchers can estimate the inputs required by these sample size calculations - for example, the concepts of sufficient precision and minimum clinically important difference will be discussed. The final portion will be interactive - members of the audience are encouraged to bring their own designs to discuss.
Please email Cliburn Chan (cliburn.chan@duke.edu) if you are interested in attending. The talk will proceed contingent on sufficient interest. Date and venue will be posted on the cfar-bcb mailing list and on our home page.
